What Are Cut Out Cookies?

Because baking is my job, I tend to forget that not everyone knows the different baking terminology that I use all the time. I just say things like “cut out” cookies and assume that you know what I’m talking about.

But, maybe you don’t! Before we go any further, I should tell you what a cut out cookie is.

Cut out cookies are cookies where you roll out the uncooked dough very thin on a countertop. You then use a cookie cutter to press into the rolled out dough to make a shape. You cut out the dough in the shape of your cookie cutter. Hence the name!

The raw cookie dough shape is placed on the cookie sheet and baked. The cut out cookies keep their shape once baked. They puff up and out a little bit, but not as much as you’d think.

For example, if your cookie cutter is in the shape or a star or a reindeer, like in my homemade chocolate shortbread cut out cookies, then your baked cookies will be in the shape of a star and reindeer.

Are Cut Out Cookies Hard To Make?

Because homemade cut out cookies look so special and unique due to their shape, many are intimidated or impressed by cut out cookies. They think that cut out cookies are harder to make than regular cookies. This is not true.

Cut out cookies are a little more labor intensive than regular cookies. But, they aren’t any harder to make. You do have to roll out the dough and cut the cookie shapes. Whereas for regular cookies, you typically use a spoon or cookie scooper and scoop out the cookie dough right from the bowl and place the scoop directly onto the cookie sheet to be baked. There are a few extra steps in cut out cookies.

Shop Holiday Cookie Cutters & Festive Sprinkle Mixes

Cut out cookies are a holiday tradition. I don’t remember a holiday without them. (Cut out cookies are also great for kid birthday parties and favors for weddings or baby showers.) My job was to press the cookie cutters into the dough and to decorate them when they came out of the oven.

Most are people baking cookies during this festive time of year. I tend to call it the holiday baking frenzy! They tend to go the extra mile and make the effort to cut out holiday cookies. Cut out cookies are special and the holidays are a special time of year!

Holiday Cookie Cutters

In today’s Minette Loves, I’m sharing my favorite holiday cookie cutters. From Christmas tress to ornaments and so much more, there are the most adorable holiday cookie cutters out there. I’m really loving the mini cut out cookie cutters, because they make the smallest, most adorable cookies!

They also make cookie cutters to make cookie mug toppers, which is a cookie that has an indentation from the cookie cutter so that once baked, the cookie perfectly rests on the side of a mug. Perfect for the winter and holiday season! I’ve seen mug topper cookie cut outs in all sorts of fun shapes like this one in is a mini gingerbread house cookie mug topper. So festive!

I hope you love my collection of holiday cookie cutters and are able to shop these sprinkle mixes.
